The Diary of Clifford Crease by Mick Gaitens published on 2019-03-28T22:51:32Z this is a song I wrote about a boat called the `Mackay Bennet`, which was ordered to go pick up any dead bodies from the scene of a sunken passenger ship. It recovered 306 from the sea. 1st and 2nd class bodies were put in coffins and put in the hold, whilst, unbelievably, 3rd class and unidentified were thrown back into the water. The crew recovered the body of a young boy, no ID, but they refused to put the boy back into the sea, and instead they all paid for the lads recovery and subsequent burial in nova scotia, and also paid for the headstone which was inscribed with the simple phrase `our babe` The young officer on deck kept his diary complete to tell this story. His name was Clifford Crease. Crease visited the lads grave everyday of his life, until his own death, whereupon they buried him next to the boy. In 1995, the government exhumed the boy, did a DNA test, and identified the lad as Sydney Leslie Goodwin The ship that sank????? Titanic! A whole other film in the waiting I think! lyrics: Sailed out of Halifax at 12:28 Leaving all that matters… drifting in our wake Its all so strange to me, to be sailing out this late No cables to be laid, and no repairs to be made My name is Clifford Crease, im of 24 yrs Im on this boat tonight, something doesn’t feel right The captain says keep your logbooks clear But have your bible close, youll wanna say a prayer for those This is the Mackay-Bennet Born of the clyde In 1884 they sent her Off with pride To lay the cables that connect From side to side Im sailing the Mackay-Bennet With those that died We sailed 800 milesthrough the wind and the waves and the rain And we couldn’t see around us, the fog was abound us Dropped the anchor at 8 am, "Drop the skiffs boys", he said in a hollowed voice And out from the deep came an unknown child we all gathered round him , we didn’t see this coming Sidney Leslie Goodwin swam into our hearts And we took him on board and wouldn’t let him go Comment by User 616262447 Hello Mick - my name is Rabia Wilcox and i am Clifford Creases granddaughter.
