This is an original song that I wrote in February of 2020. For me, it has to do with learning to cherish and protect the little girl that still lives in me--also, with nurturing the wild wisdom of children. (Photo by Kylo on Unsplash)
Here are the lyrics:
Little Girl’s Island by Jennifer Parde
She goes there to collect the broken things,
the discarded toys and fragmented dreams.
She walks on the shore, in her pretty white dress.
She pockets her favorites and leaves the rest.
It’s peaceful, this island, but a little cold.
She’s scared to be out when the sun gets old.
For when the moon rises, the bats come to play,
and the slippery shadows, she’d rather keep at bay.
“Don’t walk alone at night, my dear”,
her daddy whispers in her ear.
“Stay close to mom; stay close to home.
You shouldn’t wander on your own.”
She looks for a portal to take her back,
a trace of white light in this glittery black.
She looks for a message, she looks for a sign,
Or a hand to reach out to, but there’s no one in sight.
So she prays for night to leave her;
she prays for day to dawn.
She prays for a god to lead her,
and a shoulder to rest upon.
And the sky begins to shimmer;
it cracks with a silver white glow.
And a woman comes close beside her,
a woman she’s always known.
She says,
“I am your sacred light, my dear.
I’ll hold you close; I’ll calm your fears.
With me beside, you’re not alone.
We’ll find a place to call your home.”
They walk down the shore, past the shadows and gloom.
She’s not afraid anymore, with her hand to hold onto.
They walk to a house, it’s so little and it’s pink.
(There’s) just a bed with soft pillows, and the fluffiest of sheets.
“Here you can spend the night, my dear.
I’m always here to calm your fears.
With me inside, you're not alone.
You're safe, and you are always home.”
