That rainy morning, Hekske, the little witch, got a rude awakening well before dawn when a wet leaf landed straight on her face, while the wind was howling through the dark forest. Falke, the 9 year-old witch apprentice, had once again snuggled under the moss blanket of the witch to keep warm and dry. After a prolonged and pleasant Indian Summer which lasted from early September to the last days of October, finally autumn had arrived in northwestern Europe. The outdoors life of a witch is full of beautiful and rewarding moments, but on mornings like these, even the toughest witch can sometimes be yearning for a warmer and drier place.
A little later, both girls were sipping from a warm cup of herbal tea and their morning mood brightened up considerably when they realized it was the new moon day, which meant it was the day of their monthly trip outside the witch’s forest. They waited for the rain and wind to abate a bit, after which they took off and headed towards the east. They had no idea where they were going to and were just following their inner compass. It was a pretty easy flight with the girls benefiting from the strong tail wind and one hour later later they reached Limburg, the easternmost province of Flanders with its breathtaking landscapes of orchards and lush forests. Falke (who had lived in the human world until 6 months ago) remembered that recently some wolves had settled in this region, after an absence of over 100 years. Nature is slowly making a comeback in this part of Flanders.
While flying over a vast forest, the witches suddenly sensed that they had reached their destination and gently touched down in a clearing. Almost immediately, they saw 3 curious wolf pups running into their direction, watched from behind by their more circumspect mom. The ebullient little wolves made a lot of playful whining sounds, with some shrill yaps in between. They soon started frolicking with Falke, while the luna wolf first looked warily from a distance before approaching the girls and giving a long and fluffy hug to both witches (hugging a wolf on a cold day is a particularly pleasant feeling). After Falke and the three pups got a bit tired from all that playing, the wolves showed the witches around in their forest, where they were soon joined by the alpha male and the rest of the wolf pack (who all gave a big hug to the witches, so it really was their lucky day). After completing the tour around the woods, the witches sensed it was time to head back to their home forest. After yet another fluffy hugging session, Hekske and Falke took off and flew back towards the west. And that night Falke had many beautiful dreams about the sweet wolves of Limburg. The pure wolf energy made her feel so strong and confident that she finally managed to resist the urge to snuggle under the blanket of the little witch, despite the ceaseless cold rain and wind in the dark night …
