I also faded in a bigger room sound to get a slightly huger drum sound in the choruses and the ending. 2011-05-09T15:06:17Z Comment by From Exile We trade off guitar solos live all the time, so splitting this solo up between the three of us was a no brainer. I read that this was one of the few guitar solos Trent actually did himself, and Eric stays pretty close to the original in the first third. All of our parts went through a Big Muff or two, an EH Octave Multiplexer, and some other boost pedals into the Jet City 20. There was a ton of noise that would pop out on every pause between notes, and we left most of it in there. - John 2011-05-07T01:58:46Z Comment by From Exile Recording the bass for the first half of this song was an exercise in trying to add dynamics and some groove to really simple parts. The bass rides one note for the better part of the verses and choruses, so I would constantly be doing little slides into and out of notes and picking extra hard for certain accents. The bass doesn't even come forward in the mix until later, but it grooves with the drums and helps to give some dynamics to the rhythm guitars. - John 2011-05-07T01:43:24Z Comment by From Exile Ben and I took turns trying to nail this verse rhythm guitar part. It doesn't sound particularly tough but keeping the timing and tone consistent and cleanly shifting between the different positions is tricky. We ended up with two tracks I thought were close enough, which we then reamped through the Axe-Fx and the Jet City 20 with the Big Muff. Its doubled by the Arturia minimoog, which shows up in the chorus as well. - John 2011-05-07T01:42:54Z
