*Tommy Badman - Tape Pack Memories* by Foot Long Records published on 2022-03-15T22:47:05Z This release formed the practical element of Tommy Badman's recent dissertation titled: 'Tape Pack Memories:The Effects Of Nostalgia And The Paradox Of Choice On Jungle Production Today.' Its meant to take you on a journey through nostalgia from by gone years by being listened to in order. With a rich musical history now dating back 30 years, and the modern day re-emergence of nostalgic driven jungle music making a comeback from its early-mid nineties peak, this project fully immerses itself inside a world of jungle, old hardware samplers, new age studio setups and the effects of nostalgia and ‘The Paradox Of Choice: Why Less Is More’. Barry Schwartz’s 2016 ‘The Paradox Of Choice: Why Less Is More’ and David Berry`s 2020 ‘On Nostalgia` books are analyzed, with crucial findings used to support the practical eight track EP part of the project ‘Tape Pack Memories: The Effects Of Nostalgia And The Paradox Of Choice On Jungle Production Today.’ The project covers an Investigation into the classic timestretch sound which jungle is so synonymous for, with the tracker Renoise (using the in-built Akaizer) and the Akai S3000XL on board algorithm having much more stronger and workable features than the limitless environments to create this signature sound. The practical element of the study then looked to explore different studio environments at both extremes of the scale, with at the more restricted end just one channel of MIDI and 49 samples available through the Akai S3000XL sampler, and limitless MIDI with multi DAW environments. The results of the study were surprising with emphasis on ‘choice paralysis’ (stopping workflow) in more limitless studio environments, and the ‘satisficers’ at the other end of the scale, who are wasting far less time on irrelevant decisions, are happier and achieve much better workflow. These findings would then provide the industry with important information into what studio setups were best in recreating the timeless sound of jungle.
