The curious case of Dust, a veteran of lo fi dark atmospherics and seminal metal drummer, who weaved in and predominantly out of the public eye for decades, resurfaced on fire in the mad world of 2020.
Now armed with an Akai MPC Live II, Dust recounted the music that had informed his previous MPC2000 forays into hip hop, drum n bass and avant garde electronic...Photek, Jonny L, Metalheadz, Autechre, Ninja Tune, Ed Rush and Optical, Technical Itch on up through legends Roots Manuva, Foreign Beggars, Noisia, Biome, imprints Tempa and Deep Heads.
Discovering 20/20LDN, Ivy Lab and Sumgii’s Deadline single in the summer of 2020 inspired Dust to recalibrate and take the leap back into the mix.
Focused and reborn with a spirit ignited, Dust brings us these tough, 140bpm genreless bangers, retaining the familiar lo fi grime, grit and syncopation, yet only hinting at the heaviness that is coming next. Fair warning, Dust is just warming up and has unfinished business.
About Dust~
Dust is the latest moniker for Richmond, VA's Chris Farmer whom began playing professionally as a 14-year old drummer in the college rock and club circuit band Flat Stanley. He immediately started turning heads and getting recognition in town with his energetic style.
At 18 Farmer's aspirations as a composer led him to release a 30+ song 60-minute cassette under the name Gourd in which he played all of the instruments, drums, guitar, bass and piano. It was heavily influenced by California prog punk legends the Minutemen, further enhancing Farmer’s local reputation.
Some of his leanings tended towards heavy mangled guitar riffs, and it wasn't long after that Farmer caught up with high school friend and like mind in guitarist Ron Dimmick, later of the influential avant metal band Sliang Laos. Farmer joined Ron's band Sweat Family on bass briefly, before departing to join Pen on drums for what would become pioneering math rock band Breadwinner.
In 1997 Farmer released the critically acclaimed lo-fi avant electronic leaning Getting Warm on the Trail of Heat to critical acclaim, and in 2000 Crux, by this time fully immersed in drum n bass and utilizing an MPC2000.
2011 saw his public return with Live at Sound of Music, a solo performance combining live sequence arranging on the MPC2000 while drumming. Many of these songs are post rock prog jazz.
