The Galway Bay Hornpipe x2 - on Gautié ring key Böhm flute & on R&R #4683 by Jem Hammond (Jemtheflute) published on 2013-11-13T23:04:27Z Comparative clip of two flutes, both recorded under the same conditions (cheap headset boom microphone about 2-3" from embouchure on crown side, recorded direct to Soundcloud as two separate takes, downloaded, trimmed and spliced in Audacity, no enhancement of any kind used, then re-uploaded as a single track). The first flute is a conoid ring key Böhm system probably made by one of the major later C19th French woodwind makers and sold under a dealer brand, P Gautié & Cie, Toulouse. It is built for modern Concert Pitch, A=440. The second flute is an 8-key simple system one by Rudall & Rose (#4683) made in c1843 , but with a modern head made for it by Chris Wilkes. It also plays at A=440. I was trying in particular to illustrate "finger articulation" and idiomatic ornamentation and to eschew (not completely) use of tongued articulation. Of course the technical differences between the two systems permit or oblige somewhat different manifestations of the general principles involved. Neither take is flub-free, especially towards the end of each one! Mind, Gm is not normally considered a "natural" key for an 8-key simple system flute! Although the key signature is more approachable on the Böhm flute, I think it rather shows which of the two I am more accustomed to play! Genre Irish Traditional Music
